Step-by-step process

Complete 5 years of legal residence
Long-term resident status ('PR') requires 5 uninterrupted years of legal stay in Luxembourg. Absences of more than 6 consecutive months, or 10 months in total across the period, can reset the count.

Show stable resources and housing
You must prove regular income at least equal to the social minimum wage, sufficient for you and your family, plus health insurance and suitable accommodation.

File the long-term residence application
Send the application to the Immigration Directorate with proof of residence, income, housing and insurance. The card costs €80 and decisions usually take 3-6 months.

Use the rights it gives you
The long-term resident card is valid 5 years and renewable, removes the employer/occupation restriction, and gives near-equal treatment with nationals for work, study and social benefits.

Consider citizenship after 5 years
Naturalisation also requires 5 years of residence (the last year uninterrupted), passing the Luxembourgish language test at A2 speaking / A1 listening and the 'Living together in Luxembourg' course. India does not allow dual nationality, so you would give up your Indian passport and may apply for an OCI card.

- •Track every trip out of Luxembourg — long absences are the most common reason PR applications fail.
- •Start Luxembourgish classes early: INL and commune courses are inexpensive and fill up quickly.
- •Years spent as a student may count only partly toward long-term residence — check your own timeline before applying.
- •Family members already on family-reunification permits can apply for their own long-term status once they meet the 5-year rule.
