General journey

Common relocation rules and the checklist everyone needs.

Not sure which category fits yet? These are the relocation rules and formalities that apply to almost everyone moving from India to Luxembourg.

Documents to prepare

  • Passport and visa
  • Apostilled civil-status documents
  • Proof of address in Luxembourg
  • Passport photos and document copies

Your steps, in order

  1. Step 1

    Prepare documents in India

Apostille and translate certificates, take extra passport photos and keep certified copies of everything.

  2. Step 2

    Arrive and find accommodation

Temporary housing is fine to start, but you need an address to register at the commune.

  3. Step 3

    Declare your arrival

Register at your commune within 3 working days of arrival — this unlocks nearly every other formality.

  4. Step 4

    Health cover and social security

Get your CNS registration or co-insurance sorted, and keep your social security number safe.

  5. Step 5

    Money, tax and admin

Open a bank account, request a tax card if you earn income, and activate MyGuichet.lu for online procedures.

  6. Step 6

    Settle in

Exchange your Indian driving licence within the allowed period, and look into free language courses.

Good to know

  • Most administrations serve you in English — you do not need French or German to start.
  • Book commune appointments online where possible to avoid long waits.
